Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, made reference to ICARRD during his speech delivered during the celebration of FAO's 60th Anniversary.

President Lula said, "As proof of the importance that we give to alliances with civil society in the fight against hunger, we chose Porto Alegre as the site to hold the FAO International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development in March 2006.

This choice is a recognition of the city which held the World Social Forum three times and which symbolizes the idea that 'another world is possible'.


This is another demonstration of our efforts to incorporate food and nutritional security in the international agenda.

We must provide strategic direction for food production, most importantly for food produced by small farmers".
